Journey to Recommended Hot Springs in Winter
The next morning, go to another hot spring, located at the Matsudai Shibatouge Onsen Unkai hotel. Its bath boasts a beautiful view of the mountains and snowy landscape. To try a hot spring with healing properties, head to Tamagiya Ryokan in Matsunoyama Onsen. The hot spring water comes from sea water sealed underground about 1,200 years ago, which is then warmed by magma. Another hot spring with healing effects is in Kaikake Onsen. This hot spring water is believed to treat eye diseases. In fact, until the early Showa period, the water here was used to produce eye drops. Do also check out Bijinbayashi or “wood of beauty” where snow accumulated on the branches of 90-year-old beech trees reflects the sunlight and sparkles like diamonds. It is a dazzling sight indeed.
To try some local cuisine cooked over a hearth, head to Jiro, which was previously a 100-year-old private house. Guests can also bring wild greens which they have picked and cook them by the fireplace. One of the specialities here is rice flour bread featuring local Koshihikari rice flour which is kneaded with the water from the Matsunoyama hot springs. The bread can be stuffed with a local delicacy Toujibuta pork, salad greens and cooked vegetables. The meal is accompanied with clear soup made with local oyster mushrooms.
